Player Commitment

This is an elite club and only players with rugby experience will be considered. Players are expected to show-up at the training camp in fit, game-ready condition. During the season it is expected that even this level of fitness will be increased. If you want to be a Gee-Gee you must COMMIT to the following MANDATORY requirements:

  1. You must have played spring and/or summer club rugby in Ottawa or other locations in Canada or around the World.
  2. You must be registered with Rugby Ontario/Rugby Canada before coming to training camp.
  3. You must attend the training camp as scheduled under Game and Practice Calendar for 2008.
  4. You must be able to complete a Beep Test of 10 as a Forward and 12 as a Back. To download an MP3 version of the Beep Test, right click here and save.
  5. You must attend practices are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:00 – 8:00AM. Arrive early to warm-up and the Head Coach will start the practice at 7:00AM. There will also be positional practices from 6:00-8:00PM on Tuesday and Thursday as determined by the Coaches.
  6. If you cannot make training, you must contact Coach Robinson at 613-850-0006 or by email 24 hours before the practice. See also, ‘Policy on Team Selection’ below.

Policy on Team Selection

The Gee-Gees Men’s Rugby Club will consist of two sides. They are the ‘A’ side and the ‘B’ side. The ‘A’ side will be the more experienced players and the ‘B’ side will be the development team. The starting team members will be selected by the Head Coach with input from the Assistant Coaches, the Manager, the Team Trainer and the Team Captain. Selection will be based on ability, fitness and the Mandatory factors outlined above. Players may move from the ‘B’ side to the ‘A’ side and vice-versa depending on their performance. All players are expected to attend practices and games in order to qualify for playing time. Depending upon the number of players trying out, there may be cuts in order to get to a manageable group size.

An important factor that will be taken into consideration is consistency in attending practice. Practices have been arranged so that they do not interfere with classes. All players will attend all practices. Even if you are injured, you are expected to show up at practice unless you are totally incapacitated by your injury or excused by the Coach. The policy is that if a player misses a week of practice or attends on a random basis, he will be removed from the club roster at the discretion of the Head Coach.

Fees

1.) All players must register with Rugby Ontario/Rugby Canada for insurance and liability purposes. Click here to obtain the necessary forms. The fee in 2008 is $145.00 for senior players and $114.50 for players under 18 years of age as of Jan. 1, 2008. The Rugby Ontario/Rugby Canada registration must be completed before the start of the training camp. Print the form and send it with a cheque in the appropriate amount to: Registrar, Ontario Rugby Union, 1185 Eglinton Ave., East, Toronto, Ontario, M3C 3C6.  If you have already paid these fees, as a member of another club, send Coach Robinson an email stating that you have permission to switch from your club to the Gee-Gees. DO NOT COME TO CAMP WITHOUT THIS COVERAGE. The Gee-Gees will not submit this registration on your behalf.

2.) The club receives basic financial support from the University. The money required to operate the club in a professional manner must come from player fees, fund-raising and sponsorships. We are holding the line on the fees from last year and only increasing it by $10. The team fee for the 2008 season is $240 which is payable on Friday, August 29 (see Practice Schedule) before the trip to Burlington, Vermont. The fee includes a ticket to the Sports Clubs Awards Reception in April which we attend as a team to celebrate our accomplishments with the other Sports Clubs. The fee must be paid in order to play in our first match. This fee covers bus travel, team clothing, medical assistance, awards and other expenses and is in-line with that paid by other Gee-Gees varsity and club teams.
